Abortion Ultrasound Bill Moves In Senate

TALLAHASSEE (AP) ― A bill that would require all women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound, regardless of how far along they are, has one more Senate committee stop before the Senate floor.

The measure (SB 2400) was approved Tuesday by the Senate Health Regulation Committee. It would also require most women to sign a waiver if they don't want to see the picture.

Supporters of the ultrasound requirement say women about to undergo an abortion should have as much information as possible. Opponents argue that having women look at ultrasounds doesn't serve any medical purpose.

The ultrasound requirement is in a bill (HB 257) that has already passed the House. But the House measure also has a provision that calls for special guardians to help judges decide whether minor girls can get an abortion without their parents knowing.
