UM Bans Freshman From Having Cars On Campus

MIAMI (CBS4) ― University of Miami freshman can leave their cars at home.

In an effort to 'go green' and promote the use of public transportation and bikes, the university has banned cars for all freshman who live in campus dorms.

As part of the UM's Green U initiative, the university recently starting selling bicycles to students. University officials have already had to order more bikes, which come in the school's colors, after selling out of their original stock last Wednesday.

Also last week, UM officials launched the Zip Car program on campus.

Students, faculty and staff can reserve Zipcars at low hourly and daily rates that include gas, maintenance, insurance and reserved parking.  Three self-service Zipcars, a Honda CRV, a Toyota Prius and a Toyota Matrix, are now available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
