Despite the glowing news coming from Wall Street, the recession still has a strong grip on Main Street and that's especially evident in the unemployment numbers. In the month of October, the unemployment rate in Florida reached 11.2 percent, according to The Agency for Workforce Innovation. The October rate in Florida was the highest since June of 1975 when it was also 11.2 percent.
The October rate was a tenth of a point higher than September's 11.1 percent rate. The number of unemployed Floridians topped 1 million in September and it stayed above 1 million in October. Florida's unemployment rate for October exceeded the national figure by a full percentage point.
But, even with the high unemployment, there are industries out there that are actively hiring. According to the Agency for Workforce Innovation, statewide the areas with the most open positions were: general farmworkers, maintenance and repair work, interviewers, agricultural product graders and sorters, and sales representatives.
Breaking the job market down further, in Miami-Dade County the fields looking for the most employees included: registered nurses, interviewers, radiologic technologists, sales representatives, and retail salespersons. In Broward County, employers were looking for: electrical power-line installers and repairers, sales representatives, telemarketers, retail salespersons, and computer support specialists.
