Broward Teachers Plan Class-Action Lawsuit
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
Lawyers for the Broward Teachers Union have informed Broward district leaders that the union will file a class-action lawsuit in a state court. According to the BTU, the move is needed because Superintendent Jim Notter rescinded employment extensions of teachers.
"The district's treatment of employees who have dedicated their entire careers to educating our students is not only, but outrageous," said Broward Teachers Union president Pat Santeramo. "We remain hopeful that the district will do the right thing and we can resolve the issue."
Santeramo alleges Notter wrongfully rescinded employment extensions for 32 teachers in Florida's Deferred Retirement Option Program in May. The union said all of the teachers have dedicated 36 or more years experience and learned of the termination through a "generic form letter."
Santeramo noted that Notter employs around 36 administrators who were "retired-rehired" after completing the DROP program. The union said some of those administrators are making the maximum salaries in the district at a cost of over $3 million. Union officials said many of the "instructional positions" could be staffed by teachers about to be laid off.
Santeramo said the superintendent should cut waste in district operations instead of jobs.
