Jay-Z Cancels 2nd Voter Registration Concert

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Grammy Award winning rapper Jay-Z was forced to cancel a second voter registration rally and concert Monday at Bayfront Park in Miami, angering some, disappointing others who had shown up to listen to the music and support Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Today, Monday Oct. 6th is the last day people can register to vote in this year's presidential election.

Staffers with both John McCain and Barack Obama's camps have been racing to get as many people registered to vote as possible.

Sunday night Jay-Z and Wyclef Jean performed the first "Last Chance for Change" voter registration rally and free concert at Miami's Bayfront Park for potential voters who were at least 18 years of age. A second free show had been scheduled for Monday afternoon.

At noon, hundreds of young people milled about the Bayfront Park Amphitheater waiting for the show to begin as volunteers from Obama's camp worked the crowd and signed up new voters.

"This is one of the really big elections and I think this will be making history," said Ashley Jones who registered to vote before the concert.

"This is going to be the first time I voted, but I'm really undecided so I came here to see Jay-Z rapping and hopefully he will persuade me," said Camilio Villegas who signed up at the concert.

About an hour after the show was supposed to have started, organizers announced that it was canceled because Jay-Z has "sprained his throat" the night before and his doctor would not clear him to perform at Monday's show.

Staffers with the Obama campaign said the concerts were just part of their plan to sign up young and first time voters.

"Today a text message is going out to remind people all over Florida that today is the last day to register to vote and if you don't register to vote today you can't vote," said Obama staffer Adora Andy.

If you still haven't registered yet, here are some places where you can.

• Florida Driver's License Bureau
• Public libraries
• In Miami Dade - Team Metro offices
• Government on the Go buses
• Any state public assistance agency
• Any agencies that provide assistance to disabled persons
• Armed forces recruiting offices

To register you must bring a piece of identification, like a driver's license or a Social Security card; proof of address, a bank statement or a pay check stub will do.

Once the registration deadline has passed, the next important dates in the election will be from October 20th to November 2nd. During that time period, you can take part in early voting. But, you have to request your absentee ballot before October 29th at 5 p.m.

The general election will take place on November 4th.
