The owner of a 4-year-old Yorkshire terrier has been reunited with her beloved pet after it wandered away from her Dallas home and emerged more than a thousand miles away on a busy street on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami about a week ago.
"I'm very excited and more than a little overwhelmed," the dog's owner 77-year-old Jodi Head told CBS4's Gio Benitez just before the emotional reunion.
How the dog made it to South Florida remains a mystery. But the dog's owner believes the terrier that goes by the name of Sunshine wound up in the Sunshine State after someone took her from Lovers Lane condominium in Dallas on June 25th.
Head flew from Dallas to Miami Friday morning eager to take Sunshine back home.
"I thought she was gone. I just thought I'd never see her again," said Head.
Sunshine had recently been rescued from an East Texas puppy mill about 18 months ago. Head added a micro chip to the dog when she adopted her.
That decision paid off. Thanks to the chip, the man who found her was able to track the dog's owner.
Micha Porat said he found Sunshine sick and traumatized and wandering the streets of Biscayne Boulevard.
"It's actually unbelievable. I'm just happy I was able to get her dog back," Porat told CBS4 News.
But Porat doesn't want any reward money.
"Some things just aren't about money," he said. "It's actually unbelievable. I'm just happy I was able to get her dog back."
CBS4's Gio Benitez contributed to this report.
