Afternoon Showers/Thunderstorms Likely Through 4th
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
If your holiday plans include any outdoor activities, you may want to make sure the activities are in the morning because the same weather pattern of evening showers and thunderstorms is likely to stay in place throughout the weekend, according to the CBS4 Storm Team. On Friday afternoon, the storms may become strong as the daytime heating gives way to clouds and thunderstorms by mid to late afternoon with strong winds being the main threat.
"I really don't see much day to day change into the weekend. The best chance for storms will be during the afternoon and evening. A few areas could see some heavy downpours at times. The best chance for sun and no rain will be during the morning hours," said CBS4 Chief Meteorologist David Bernard.
Rain is expected through the entire Independence Day weekend. And if you think the rainy season has truly lived up to its name, you are correct.
During the month of June, there was around 9 inches of rain across South Florida. Those numbers are around an inch above average for the month of June. Several sites across the state recorded over 10 inches of rain, including 14.38 inches at FIU, 13 inches in Hialeah, 12.2 inches in Cooper City, and Miami Beach's near record amount of 17.84 inches. For Miami Beach, the 17.84 inches was the second wettest June on record, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.
Water levels in Lake Okeechobee, which supplies surrounding towns and farms and is a backup source for the urban east coast, have risen more than a foot over the last month, to 12.45 feet above sea level. Last year, the lake was nearly three feet lower, according to the Herald.
