Suspect Chased And Shot After Robbery In West Dade

WESTCHESTER (CBS4) ― Lizbeth Mesa, who owns a self-storage building and business in West Miami-Dade said a man entered her store on Tuesday and pulled a knife on one of her employees. The robber fled, stealing a vehicle which he rammed a pursuing police officer; he was eventually shot in the chest by police.

Mesa and employee Gerardo Vega told CBS4 Liv Davalos that nothing like this has ever happened to them.

Vega explained he just opened the store for about an hour when a man walked into the office and around the counter. "When I saw him, I thought something is going to happen here."

The man pulled out a knife, and screamed at Vega for money, saying he hadn't eaten in days.

Vega added, "He said 'give me the money, give me all the money you have here'. I said to calm down, that I didn't have any money."  He continued, "'Follow me, and I'll give you all the money you want.'"

Vega then ran to the back of the building, yelling for the cleaning crew to leave and call police.

The suspect fled, carjacking a vehicle when he was eventually spotted by police.

According to Miami-Dade officers, the man carjacked a black SUV in the area of NW 81st Avenue and 2nd Street.

Police pursued him into the Westchester area, to a parking lot of the Galloway Surgical Center. That's where the suspect bailed out.

Police confirm the suspect was shot at least once and was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
