Weston Studies Charter School System

Weston Seeks To Convert The County-Run Schools Into Chartered Ones

WESTON (CBS4) ― Four of five Weston city commissioners agreed on Monday to spend up to $25,000 to study the legal issues surrounding the conversion of traditional public schools to charters.

Mayor Eric Hersh considered the concept several weeks ago after it was becoming apparent the Broward School Board may not be able to build a new high school to relieve crowding at Cypress Bay High.

Hersh said the legal study could take up to six months. If commissioners then wanted more information, they could involve parents and school employees in another, more-extensive study. The earliest any conversions could happen would not be before  the 2010-11 school year.

The idea isn't unprecedented: Lake Wales, in central Florida, has a five-school charter system carved from the local district.

School district attorneys and city attorneys are researching all the related implications over costs regarding converting public schools to chartered ones.
