Metrorail cars and Metrobus routes are going wireless next week, and it won't cost riders an extra penny.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez has teamed up with Miami-Dade Transit for an expansion of the Mayor's Wireless Miami-Dade Initiative, which brought free wireless service to more than 92,000 users at Tropical, Tamiami and Goulds parks.
Free wireless service will come to select Metrorail cars and 95 Express buses on Thursday, November 12. The pilot program is expected to run through spring 2010. Discussions are underway to expand the service to more parks and other county-owned buildings.
The expanded Wi-Fi pilot program is designed to improve the transit experience for residents and visitors, allowing riders to access the Internet via laptop or other wireless device. The initiative was created in an attempt to appeal technologically to County residents, businesses and visitors.
"Thousands of park goers are enjoying free Wi-Fi at our parks. Expanding wireless to our transit system is the next logical and exciting step to continue our Wi-Fi efforts" said Mayor Alvarez.
