There will be another milestone accomplished at the new Florida Marlins stadium on Friday afternoon. At 1 p.m., the first vertical concrete pour for the super columns of the new ballpark will take place. The pour will be for the first 16 feet of the 40-foot tall rebar cage that was put up last week.
Once it is completed, the elliptical shaped column will stand 8 feet wide by 15 feet long and will rise up to 130 feet tall. The column will be one of twelve super column that help support the 8,300 ton retractable roof, which is expected to weigh nearly the same as the Eiffel Tower.
The retractable roof will consist of three panels elevated over the playing field supported by a two track system on the North and South side of the ballpark. The column poured on Friday will be part of the north track which should be 30 feet taller than the south columns.
The new Marlins stadium will hold around 37,000 spectators and be air-conditioned. Currently, the Marlins play in Land Shark Stadium and have trouble drawing almost any fans for the games. The stadium will cost the area over $600 million.
