Chief John Timoney's Statement On Loaner SUV
I have been a customer of Lexus of Kendall for nearly four and a half years now, and I have leased a vehicle from Lexus for the past five and a half years. I was given the opportunity to test a newer model demonstration "Hybrid" vehicle for possible purchase or lease at the conclusion of my current leasing agreement with my Lexus dealer, which is located outside the jurisdictional boundaries of The City of Miami and to the best of my knowledge does no business with the City of Miami. At no time did I consider this a gift nor did I find there to be a conflict with my current position.
In recent days, I have spoken with friends and colleagues and they all agree that no laws or ethical canons have been violated. However, upon reflection I understand how the use of the vehicle may be ill perceived. The last thing that I want is for my actions to be perceived as anything other than beyond reproach. Therefore, this afternoon I purchased the vehicle in question.
As stated yesterday, I am also requesting an opinion from the Commission on Ethics concerning this matter.
