Bush To Ink U.S.-India Nuke Agreement

WASHINGTON (AP) ― President Bush plans to sign into law on Wednesday a bill allowing civilian U.S. nuclear trade with India.

The signing culminates three years of work by the Bush administration to allow U.S. businesses to begin selling nuclear fuel, technology and reactors to India in exchange for safeguards and U.N. inspections at India's civilian, but not military, nuclear plants.

Critics say such trade could spur a nuclear arms race in South Asia.

The White House has said the bilateral nuclear deal itself was expected to be signed shortly after Bush signs the legislation approving it.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Saturday that no substantive issues stand in the way of signing the overall deal.
