Florida State University officials filed a written appeal to the NCAA saying recent sanctions that ordered the school to forfeit victories unfairly punished the school and coaches, including head football coach Bobby Bowden. The NCAA sanctions came after a widespread athletic cheating scandal was uncovered at FSU.
The University said in the letter, "Even if this committee upholds the vacation penalty, it should not require the reconfiguration of the records of innocent head coaches."
The move comes because Bowden currently has 382 career victories, just one behind Penn State's Joe Paterno. Whichever coach finishes with the most victories, will hold the NCAA Division I record for wins. If Bowden loses 14 victories, his quest would essentially be over as both coaches continue coaching in 2009.
Since the sanctions were announced Bowden has only asked, "Does the punishment fit the crime? I think that's the thing, that's the thing we gotta find the answer to right there."
The academic cheating scandal mainly occurred through online testing for a single music history course from the fall of 2006 through the summer semester of 2007. 10 sports lost scholarships due to the cheating scandal and the school was placed on four years probation.
