Another 'Cane Felled By Heat, Humidity

CORAL GABLES (CBS4) ― It's hot and humid in Coral Gables this August, and that's causing problems with some members of the University of Miami Hurricanes as they practice up for the start of the season. Wednesday, Miami senior defensive tackle Antonio Dixon was taken to a hospital by ambulance apparently suffering from the effects of the heat.

The team said Dixon was in good condition, and he was expected to remain hospitalized overnight as a precaution. Miami coach Randy Shannon had originally said Dixon was suffering from dehydration, but the team later said his ailment was unclear.

Dixon, a 6-foot-3, 322-pound senior and projected starter, is the third player in the last two days to leave practice early. Running backs Damien Berry and Lee Chambers left Tuesday's practice early due to dehydration.

The practice was Miami's first in full pads and their fifth consecutive, which lasted 2 hours with the heat index in the mid-90s.
