From house fires to heat exhaustion, pets can fall victim to disasters just like their owners. A few months ago the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue department received pet oxygen masks, which could spell out lifesaving help for many animals.
"They are members of our family. And with a few dollars, the cost of a set of masks, we can save lives," said Hilda Wood of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "We can save pet lives."
But this doesn't mean every pet gets helped in emergency cases.
"Every unit in the county has oxygen and oxygen masks for people. Unfortunately for the pets we only have one set of masks per station. Ideally, each unit would have a set of masks," said Wood.
The mask sets aren't that expensive, at just 60 dollars a set, all fire rescue units could be outfitted with the life saving equipment.
"By applying the oxygen and the proper size mask, it can bring the pet around. It can save lives," Wood said.
And the masks don't just help dogs.
"Whether its a small little bird, up to a Great Dane, any size pet would be covered by the 3 sizes," says Wood.
So far $200 have been donated through
Neighbors 4 Neighbors, leaving Miami-Dade fire rescue just a couple thousand dollars short of their goal.
Officer Wood said it best, "How do you put a price on a life
you cant."
