Woman Doesn't Let Life Get Her Down, Gets New Arm

CBS4's Neighbors 4 Neighbors: 305-597-4404

HOLLYWOOD (CBS4) ― Jo-Ann Salzlien is finally heading home after a month in the hospital. She lost her arm in a hit and run crash in Hollywood, and she knew times would be tough, especially since she was hit by an uninsured driver–meaning there is no coverage for a prosthetic arm. But she figured, she'd get by somehow.

"God says you take care of these things for me, and I'll take care of those things for you," said Salzlien. That's always been her belief.

She must have taken care of things well, because a CBS4 News viewer was there to take care of Salzlien when she needed help the most.

Aldo Alvarez runs Ortho Pro Associates in Kendall

"And you know what they make there?" asked CBS4's Ted Scouten. "Arms! "No!" explained Jo-Ann. "The right kind? Good quality arms," she joked.

When Aldo Alvarez saw saw her story last week he was touched. "I fell in love with the story when I saw it," he told Salzlien.

"Thank you very much!" she responded. "I figure you know, we'll do what ever it takes to get you going," said Alvarez.

That's when it really began to hit Salzlien. "I wasn't planning on having one!" she said, beginning to cry. "Now I have to make more plans."

CBS4's Neighbors 4 Neighbors got the two together. Now as Jo-Ann heads home she'll have tough days ahead, but at least she'll know that even though something awful happened to her that day back in May--when she was left for dead– Wednesday something wonderful happened that she never expected.

A complete stranger decided he would help change her life again–this time for the better.

"I figure if I don't expect, I can't be disappointed," she said just before being wheeled out of the hospital. "I wasn't expecting that I'd have one."

Then she began to laugh, "I guess I can expect now!"
