CBS4/Red Cross Hero: Michael Fuller

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Michael Fuller is a hero to some for his military service. But his family sees him as an even bigger hero for his actions to save their lives. His actions have made him a CBS4/Red Cross Hero.

Michael was in Miami on military leave to attend his grandfather's funeral. During that time at home, he was faced with a situation that made Michael take some heroic steps to save his family from a fire.

He says he was asleep at around 1:00 A.M., when he thought he heard the sound of crackling from the front end of the house.

"I just looked through this window and I saw the orange glow and that's when the smoke started coming through the cracks up here I knew there was a fire," Michael said.

He managed to get the entire family out of the house safely, including the family dog. But the family lost more than their home to the fire.

"Their office was in the garage, so their entire business, their paperwork, all the contacts went up in flames," Michael said about his parents' cleaning business.

His actions have prompted the Red Cross to honor his heroic actions. "The American Red Cross Greater Miami and the Keys Chapter is recognizing him as a hero for having saved his family and having been able to get his entire family out of the house," Carlos Blandon of the Red Cross said.

But Michael is equally grateful to the Red Cross for supplying his family with money; temporary housing and many other forms of help to get the family's lives back together.

Still, there is one thing Michael would like to find, "I still haven't found my wallet, I've got my military wallet ID and my stuff in there, my social, birth certificate, everything's in my wallet. I'm hoping that one day when I'm sifting through everything, I'll find my wallet, " Michael said.
