MIAMI (CBS4) ― During difficult economic times such as what many South Floridians are witnessing with money tight, jobs being lost and employee benefits being curtailed, there is an organization offering programs to workers to help them stay on top of their finances.

The Human Services Coalition is a South Florida non-profit organization that promotes economic empowerment and community prosperity. One of their programs is to bring financial literacy workshops to employees of local businesses.

"To have a stable, prosperous, established group of employees, benefits all of us" said Karla Gotlieb of the Human Services Coalition.

She went on to describe what the program entails, such as "how to resolve credit issues you may have, how to save, how to think about retirement."  She added, "We have your basic benefits like food stamps, low-cost health insurance, micro-finance. We've got information on transportation help."

Eliza Fendell owns Aeropost, a local shipping company, who has introduced it to her employees for years.

"It all started a couple years ago during tax season," Fendell noted.  "I found out what one of my employees was paying to get their taxes done. I was completely horrified that she was paying literally hundreds of dollars to her taxes done when I was paying $14.95."

Through the program, employees can take advantage of free tax preparation services.

"We're telling people… do not pay to get your taxes done. There are 90 free tax preparation sites throughout the county," commented Gotlieb. "Number two, maybe you are going to get that tax money, maybe you're going to get a refund for two, three-thousand dollars. Think about how you're going to spend it."

The program helped people like Jay Rockwell.

"I've re-thought the way I spend and I carpool into work, and I take advantage of other services," said Rockwell.

Although the program was created to help employees, employers are seeing the benefits.

"A happy employee is a productive employee and the better the work environment," said Fendell.
