Food Banks Stay Open Despite Economic Downturn

(CBS4) Even in the struggling economy, food banks still have to find a way to move ahead to provide for those who can't afford to do it themselves. Manna Share A Meal is a small operation, but a powerful force when feeding the hungry of Broward County.

"Our job here is to take care of the needs whether it's physical or spiritual," the managing director of Manna Share A Meal said.

A small group of volunteers runs the operation that doesn't let a lack of food keep them from filling their shelves.

"With the gas prices, people are just not putting money into food nowadays, and we are just so happy that we are here to just help them out," said volunteer Lois Johnson.

Manna's volunteers pride themselves on their personal touch. The workers believe it's not just a food bank, but it's a place where people go to get guidance and feel better about their situations.

"It's nice to come across people that are trying to help you and is willing to help you and is there for you," said Kimberly Mercer. "It was scary because you look at your kids and I can't imagine not being able to feed them."

The volunteers handed out their first bag of food around 20 years ago, and since then, most everyone who comes through the doors have nothing but praise for the organization.

"I am really thankful for places like this. I really, really am. These people are really good people and I appreciate them," Mercer said.
