Girl Scouts Bring Garden To Life

Slideshow: Garden Work Rewarding For Girl Scouts

KEY LARGO, Fla (CBS4) ― The shirts on their backs read "Ordinary Girls Doing Extraordinary Things" and that's just what Girl Scout Troops 626 and Troop 270 are doing for the special needs kids that receive therapy at Island Dolphin Care in Key Largo. The troops were in need of a community service project for their Silver Award and decided to take on the difficult task of reconstructing an empty lot into a beautiful garden. The garden was created especially for children who are blind, recovering from surgery, paralyzed or living with a disease or illness.

Troop Leaders, Debi Hoak and Patty Rabin commissioned the help of  and various nurseries, construction companies, volunteers and local Homestead architect, David Feinberg, to help the girls complete the project.  Debi says her scouts have broadened their perspectives as a result of the project, "The girls are learning how to be community service minded and they're learning things they've never done before - like how to lay out an architectural design, what plants are important and native to South Florida."

Island Dolphin Care provides dolphin assisted therapy to children with critical illnesses, disabilities and special needs from all over the world, a cause the girls are excited to champion. "We've learned a lot, to appreciate what we have. The special needs children that come here for therapy are inspiring" says Girl Scout, Danielle Lyn.

Leader, Patty Rabin, is excited to see it all come together, "it's phenomenal, my heart is so big right now especially with what we've been able to accomplish in the last few weeks."

The Girl Scout's gardens are still a work in progress, and if you'd like to help donate to the cause, please contact Neighbors 4 Neighbors at 305-597-4404.
