TAMARAC (CBS4) ― The economy is hard on everyone, especially for people on fixed incomes like senior citizens who fight inflation every day with high costs in grocery, energy, home and healthcare bills.  Some find they cannot pay for everything.

Peter Klein won't be having birthday cake to celebrate his 56th birthday next month. A botched stomach surgery has left him without the ability to digest food for almost a year now.

He told CBS4 Reporter Jorge Estevez, ""I was down to 68 pounds."  He added, "I don't know what's going to be, where I am going to live."

Peter and his companion of 26 years have been notified their home will be foreclosed.

At the very moment, he is battling leukemia and Katherine is recovering from a construction accident when she was hit in the head, in the face and the chest.

Their monthly medical expenses left them behind on the mortgage.

"The only place they wanted to put me was in my car," Klein explained, "and for me to live in my car, I need electricity to run my machine, to get nutrition in my body so I could live."

Suzanne Weiss of a neighborhood housing service urges people not to wait but to get advice early before the foreclosure process begins.

"We tell them what some of the options are," Weiss said.

But faced with few options, Peter and his companion still have faith they may celebrate his birthday together as they have for 26 years.

Recently, their mortgage holder, Washington Mutual, delayed their eviction until September.
