Abandoned Newborn Found In Kendall Dumpster
KENDALL (CBS4) ―
A newborn baby is hospitalized after being found Monday night in a dumpster behind Baptist Hospital in Kendall.
A janitor found the baby, with its umbilical cord still attached, around 8:35 p.m. when he heard a cry and then found the infant in the garbage. The janitor ran to a nearby Miami Dade Fire Rescue truck for help.
Miami Dade Fire Rescue Captain George Alvarez couldn't believe it.
"In this profession you see a lot of stuff, but there are a few calls that really stick out and this is one of them. You know, you don't expect to find babies in dumpsters, that's a new life," said Alvarez.
The baby, which was taken to Baptist Hospital to be checked, was in good condition according to doctors.
Police are now looking for the child's mother.
Under Florida's "Safe Haven Baby Law" the child's mother could have dropped the baby off at the hospital without repercussions. Passed in 2001, the law allows a parent to leave their newborn baby of approximately 3 days old or less, at any Florida fire rescue station, EMS station, or hospital emergency room without fear of prosecution and totally anonymous.
Since its inception 117 infants have been saved.
This law was passed in response to the numerous tragedies of Florida's newborn babies being left in dangerous places where they are not likely to survive.
