Cindy McCain Visits Amigos For Kids In Miami

Watch Jorge Estevez's Entire Interview In The Video Player To The Right

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Cindy McCain did her own campaign stop in South Florida Monday. She headed to Amigos for Kids, an afterschool program in Miami started almost two decades ago, and she spoke exclusively to CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

"He is on the other side of town," said Cindy McCain, as she chuckled after a child asked her where Mr. McCain was Monday afternoon. She met with dozens of children and even sang Happy Birthday to one child. Children are her passion.

This mother of 7 supports "Operation Smile", which corrects facial deformities.

"They give a child self-respect and dignity for so little," said Mrs.
McCain, of a program close to her. One of her children had corrective surgery. "For what the cost of a good dinner out, you can fix the face of a child," said Mrs. McCain. She says she also wants to help get families out of poverty. "People really can't relate to being a good neighbor if they are hungry and have no place to live," admitted Mrs. McCain.

And she also talked about volunteering. This activist told CBS4's Jorge Estevez volunteering starts at home on a Saturday afternoon.

"Instead of watching football, come with me and let's do something," said Mrs. McCain, laughing and realizing football is very important to a lot of people.

She also knows how to fight the rumors on the campaign trail. "The best thing I can do for my husband is not read it and keep an even keel," said Mrs. McCain.

The wife of a Senator, Mrs. McCain is a pro at giving speeches, so we asked if she has given tips to vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin.

"She did ask me a couple of questions about packing and travel. I gave her the best advice I could."

And we ended our interview giving Mrs. McCain a memento from her trip, a banner made by the children of Amigos for Kids thanking Mrs. McCain for her visit.

"This is a wonderful treat I am going to hang it in the office."
