Illegal Fireworks: You Can Buy Em' But Not Use Em'

DANIA BEACH (CBS4) ― As we celebrate the July 4th Holiday, you may have already heard firecrackers going off where you live. During this time of year, the stores which sell those fireworks are busier than ever. CBS4's Jorge Estevez found out there is a loophole which allows those stores to sell fireworks.

TNT is a fireworks store on Dania Beach Boulevard which is very popular and even open 24 hours leading up to the 4th. But before they let you buy fireworks, they have you sign on the dotted line.

The rockets red glare won't be the only things lighting up the skies over South Florida July Fourth. "Want to grab the star clusters," said Greg Anderson to his family as they shopped at the T-N-T fireworks store. The Anderson's may have their own bombs bursting in air. They went gallantly streaming through the aisles of the store to provide the ultimate American salute. "Got to get out of here. You guys are stressing me out with the money," he told his son who was feverishly picking up items.

And all this fireworks shopping is totally legal. With officers watching, people registered their address, proved they were 18 and signed a waiver. The store manager, Jeffrey Page, told CBS4's Jorge Estevez they do everything by the book. "They are supposed to read the form they sign that they do, and once they sign that they do its in there hands," Page said.

The form refers buyers to a Florida Statute which says buyers won't use fireworks unless they have to scare off wild birds. It's a little more complicated than that, but you got the idea.

So in review, it's legal to sell fireworks. It's legal to buy fireworks. But it's illegal for you to set them off.

"It's a family activity. We've had it for years now," said a young member of the Anderson family.

And it may be the home of the free, but with a $700 total, this family is going to need to be brave when they get home to mom. "Maybe we won't tell her," said the dad.

Safety is an issue and fire departments recommend you attend professional fireworks shows instead of setting off your own display.
