Firefighters Work Overnight To Put Out Ship Fire

The Ship Has 6,000 Gallons Of Fuel & Mattresses

It Was Destined For Haiti Sunday

Firefighters Say This Is A Difficult Operation

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

City of Miami Fire Rescue crews are fighting a fire aboard an occupied freighter ship on the Miami River, and are expected to be there through Sunday morning.

Crews are at 2974 NW North River Driver, fighting the fire that is causing smoke that can be seen miles away. Officials say 80 percent of the 200 foot freighter has been engulfed in flames. Rescue workers evacuated the nine crew members on the ship, and people on adjacent boats, because the intensity of the smoke was overcoming them.

Fire rescue officials say the Panamanian flagged "Atlantic" was destined for Haiti on Sunday. It has 6,000 gallons of fuel and mattresses, which has made for an extremely difficult firefighting operation.

Firefighters on boats and trucks have been pouring water on the vessel from all directions, trying to prevent the fire from spreading any further.
