Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can be successfully treated. Screening tests can find cancer early, when it's most treatable.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recommends that you:
1. Know your risk
· Talk to your family to learn about your family health history.
· Talk to your doctor about your personal risk of breast cancer.
2. Get screened
· Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at higher risk.
· Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk.
· Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at 20, and every year starting at 40.
3. Know what is normal for you.
Go to your health care provider right away if you notice any of these breast changes:
· Lump, hard knot or thickening
· Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
· Change in the size or shape of the breast
· Dimpling or puckering of the skin
· Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
· Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
· Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
· New pain in one spot that doesn't go away
4. Make healthy lifestyle choices
· Maintain a healthy weight
· Add exercise into your routine
· Limit alcohol intake.

MEMORIES OF MY FIRST RACE FOR THE CURE I remember my first Race For The Cure. Well, it wasn't really "my" race; it was more of my husband's race. His law firm had committed to a table at the event and he and his fellow attorneys were interested in getting some exercise and supporting a good cause. And since my husband knew I had the BRCA breast cancer gene, he was enthusiastic about being part of such an important event. I appreciated his excitement, but I preferred to take a more passive stance. Since breast cancer hadn't affected me yet, I went to the race as a complete bystander, cheering on my husband and occasionally looking at my watch to see when we could wrap it up! It was a hot morning, a little drizzly and frankly, a little unnerving. There were so many people "running for someone." So many women who had "running for my mom, my sister, myself" on the backs of their shirts.
I admired them but I didn't feel like one of them. In fact, I didn't really know anyone who had the disease. My father's two sisters had breast cancer but that was long, long ago. I barely knew them and I was a young, healthy woman who had just gotten married. I stood by the finish line waiting for my husband to finish so we could go home. As I saw the participants, filled with so much vigor and pride, I felt myself choke up a bit. I began to realize how incredible this event really was, how much it meant to so many people. But I'm not going to exaggerate my feelings to you; I felt very removed from the real meaning of the race. I could appreciate the importance but I would be lying if I said I was truly moved by that first race.
So imagine how I felt just two years later, when Bobbi Meyers from the local Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure asked me to be a part of the event on stage. By then, I was a survivor. (A lot can happen in two years!) If I tried to put my feelings that day into words, I'm afraid it would sound trite because I am simply not that good of a writer. I stood on the stage and looked at the thousands of people who were there to support survivors. Thousands! It sounds so simple to say, "I felt as if I were not alone." How often have we heard those words? But it was true. After enduring so much personal struggle, I could not deny the fact that there were others with similar battles. Maybe the circumstances were not identical, but you know what? These people cared. A lot! After months of putting on a brave face and tackling this disease with a seemingly positive spin, I could admit to myself that this was a grueling ordeal. And knowing that there were thousands of South Floridians who understood my pain, the Race For The Cure truly became "my" race.

Our History
As we honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we would like to share with our subscribers a brief history of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate and some words of support from local sponsors.
The Susan G. Komen For the Cure Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate is dedicated to saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Since its inception in1996, the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race For the Cure® and the Affiliate has raised more than $6 million and reached hundreds of thousands of women and men in educational outreach through grassroots efforts.
The Affiliate funds local mission and education projects. The Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Affiliate's mission outreach provides mentoring for recently diagnosed breast cancer patients through its "A Buddie For You" program and includes a variety of outreach and educational programs in collaboration with local community organizations and entities.
In 2007, the Affiliate raised more than $1.5 million in the fiscal year ending March 2007 to support the fight against breast cancer. The money funded 18 grants that are diverse groups of not-for-profit health care organizations, public health agencies and community groups that further the Komen mission. More than 7,000 medically underserved individuals will be impacted by the grant dollars provided for mammograms and thousands more will be impacted by education and awareness programs.
In accordance with Komen's guidelines, 75 percent of the net dollars raised through local events, including the annual Race for the Cure®, will stay in the local community to fund breast cancer screening, education and awareness initiatives. The remaining 25 percent will be pooled with Komen's national efforts to fund research programs. In 2007, more than $915,000 stayed in the local community. For more information about the Susan G.
