A Disease Which Touches Us All
by Shannon Hori
Hello Friends,
We all know someone whose life changed the moment they learned they had breast cancer. My Grandmother was 72 years old when she lost her battle to the disease. Sadly, people weren't as aware of the importance of getting mammograms 20 years ago as they are today. My Grandmother learned she had breast cancer when it was too late to do something about it. It was a hard lesson for my Mother to learn. But one that she's made sure to teach me.
A few years ago one of my close girlfriends was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was shocked, because she is a marathon runner, doesn't smoke, eats right, and wasn't even 40-years old yet. Fortunately, she found the lump in her breast early. And today, I'm happy to say, she's cancer free and still running strong.
These are just a couple of stories. This year, 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That's why the women of CBS4 are starting a station initiative called "News 4 the Cure." On the 4th of every month, I will personally send out an electronic newsletter to remind you that it's time for a breast self-exam. Together with the local affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, we will remain committed to make sure you have all the information you need to live a long and healthy life - free of breast cancer.
