Columbus Beats Florida 3-1

SUNRISE (CBS4.com) ― The Florida Panthers lost 3-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night at the Bank Atlantic Center. With only 10 games left to play, time is running out on the Panthers chances to make the playoffs in 2009.

Winger Raffi Torres scored twice late in the third period for the Blue Jackets. Torres scored his first goal of the night with 2:46 remaining in the third. He tied it at 1 and ruined Florida goalie Tomas Vokoun's bid for his seventh shutout of the season.

Then with just 1:33 left, Torres scored on a wrist shot to put Columbus up 2-1. Antoine Vermette added an empty-net goal with 19 seconds left. Rostislav Olesz scored the only goal for the Panthers. Florida has lost five of their last six games.

Steve Mason made 22 saves for the Blue Jackets, Tomas Vokoun stopped 34 shots.

The Panthers, who will end a five-game homestand on Monday against Carolina, were in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Montreal. They have not played in the postseason since 2000.
