MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The Florida Panthers named Randy Sexton as their general manager on Friday, a move that wasn't necessarily a surprise considering Sexton had already taken over most of those duties since Jacques Martin's departure early in the summer.

Sexton, 50, had been working as an assistant under former GM and coach Martin since 2007.

When Martin left to coach the Montreal Canadiens on June 1, Sexton oversaw the team's contract negotiations, scouting, administration and player development. He helped the Panthers re-sign Stephen Weiss and David Booth to contract extensions, and inked deals with goalie Scott Clemmensen, defenseman Jordan Leopold and center Steve Reinprecht during the summer.

"As Randy took us through the draft, the free agent signing period, we realized that he was the right guy," Panthers president Michael Yormark said. "We realized that this was the natural fit."

The Panthers made the announcement in Helsinki, where Florida faced the Chicago Blackhawks in its season opener.

"I'm grateful for being given the opportunity," Sexton said. "I had no doubt that if I did what I'd set out to do, that today would come and I'm very grateful that it has."
