Bees Attack, Kill Beagle In Weston
Dog Was Tied To A Palm Tree
WESTON (CBS4) ―
A Weston family's pet beagle was killed when a swarm of bees attacked her in their front yard. It happened in the 2500 block of Jardin Lane Tuesday morning. Dog owner Jorge Brathwaite said he let their 8-year-old beagle named Lucy out to sun herself and then he heard the dog let out a yelp.
"Ten minutes after letting her out I heard the branch fall. There was a swarm around the dog and to the entry of the house."
The hive was located in a Fox Tail Palm next to his office. Brathwaite rushed out and says he tried to use bug spray to ward off the bees and even a garden hose, but they were relentless.
"She (Lucy) went into the hedges trying to find a safe place, but she couldn't find one. She went down and stayed down."
By the time fire rescued arrived, Lucy was dead.
According to Brathwaite the dog was the pride and joy of his wife. Lucy was a rescue dog found on a highway in Maryland some years ago. She was the celebrity of her Weston neighborhood. Everyone loved to give Lucy treats including neighbor Elise Bolski.
Boski has two dogs of her own and says they're missing Lucy too. "She was sweet and greeted everybody. She was friendly to the other dogs."
BSO spokesman Mike Jachles called it a tragic incident. "Some things are just tragic accidents and this appears to be just that."
The bee removal company hired to remove the hive told
CBS4 news reporter Joan Murray the bees are most likely the more aggressive Africanized honey bees. They say there's been a significant rise in the number and size of these bee colonies in south Florida. There is little homeowners can do to prevent the hives from forming.
