CBS 4 News viewer with a sharp eye and a good close-up camera lens captured a pod of manatees swimming slowly off shore of Fort Lauderdale beach Friday morning.
CBS4 news viewer Stacy George wrote in her e-mail, "It's a beautiful sight from our condo on the beach. It's nice to see these beautiful creatures doing well."
George sent the pictures in order to share them with our viewers.
It's also our way to remind South Florida's boating community to be extra cautious during the upcoming 4th of July celebrations.
"Watercraft-related mortality is an ongoing yet preventable cause of manatee injuries and deaths," said Dr. Katie Tripp, Director of Science and Conservation for Save the Manatee Club, in a recent news release.
According to Dr. Tripp, there were 42 confirmed watercraft-related manatee deaths through June 5, 2009, and a total of 240 mortalities so far this year.
"With the cooperation and vigilance of the boating community, we hope that manatees can be protected from further injury during the July 4th weekend and the remainder of the summer boating season. Boaters often travel in waterways shared with manatees so they play an important role in protecting this endangered marine mammal," said Tripp.
Boaters should follow all posted boat speed regulations, slow down if manatees are in the area, and stay in deep water channels when possible.
