Family Fights For Pet Dogs' Lives

MEDLEY (CBS4) ― It's plain to see that Julie Roberts loves her Siberian Huskies. Four of the dogs have been at Animal Care and Control since Monday after being seized for killing a neighbor's terrier, and now the Huskies could be euthanized for mauling the dog to death.

"It's unjust, it's unconstitutional, and it's inhumane," said Roberts. "I hope everyone understands this could happen to anybody."

Julie's brother Phillip was moved to tears at the thought of losing his pets. "I've been with the dogs since they were born. I love them so much."

"One grabbed her and I was trying to run and they all jumped on her." Veno Charles, whose dog was killed, is equally torn apart, but sees no other choice. "I think the law has to be upheld or they are making trouble for everybody."

Roberts has hired a lawyer, and he has notified animal care that he intends to fight to spare the Huskies.

"If these animals had a prior instance where they attacked, or threatened to attack...that's certainly something the law does take into account.  That's not what happened here," said Attorney Jason Wander.

"My home is not my home anymore," said Roberts. "It's hard without them."

Roberts says losing her dogs would be like losing her family, and that's not something she's prepared to do.

This dogfight is far from over.  A hearing on the case is scheduled for September 8th.
