Police Seek Kids Possibly Exposed To Rabid Bat

FT MYERS (CBS4) ―

A search is underway in Southwest Florida for children who may have been exposed to a bat later found to be infected with rabies, but the parents of at least one child seen playing with the bay said their daughter never touched the winged mammal.

The Lee County Health Department said Wednesday it is looking for three boys who were among the kids at Fort Myers Beach seen playing with a dead bat that later tested positive for rabies. They may need rabies injections. Witnesses saw the children, estimated to be between 10 and 12 years old, handling, kissing and playing with the bat June 15.

Health officials in southwest Florida said they've found a young girl who was seen in a photo playing with the rabid bat, but her parents say she had no contact with it.

The photo of the girl was sent to the Lee County Health Department, which managed to locate her Wednesday after putting out a press release. She was not identified.

Health officials say they do not know the names of the other children.
