Popular UF Bats Swoop To New Home
GAINESVILLE (CBS4) ―
First, the weight of the 200,000 bats brought down their home.
But now the bats are back at the University of Florida with an even bigger, sturdier home in which to house them.
A new bat house has been constructed to house the University of Florida's large bat population that was at first a nuisance for the campus athletic facilities that was inundated with them.
In 1991, university officials came up with a solution and that's when they built the original structure. But that structure collapsed due to the weight of some 200,000 bats in August, according to the Gainesville Sun.
Ken Glover, the university's pest management coordinator who oversaw the project, said he expects as many as 400,000 bats to take up residence in their new digs.
"We're hoping for immediate occupancy," Glover told the Gainesville Sun.
The bats help keep university costs low because they can collectively consume tons of insects each night and help control other pest populations.
