2 Kids Charged With Animal Cruelty In Duck Death

Witness: Kids Threw 3 Shih Tzus Onto Duck

Duck Died From Injuries

It Happened At Riviera Isles Community In Miramar

MIRAMAR (CBS4) ― A couple of Broward children have been charged with animal cruelty for the alleged torture of a duck that later died from its severe injuries.

The scene unfolded Tuesday in Miramar when police received a call regarding a possible case of animal abuse at 5304 SW 159th Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found a severely injured duck laying still by the edge of a lake. The arriving officer was told by a witness that he saw two boys, believed to be 14 and 10-years old, throw three Shih Tzu dogs onto the duck, which caused the dogs to attack the duck, according to a Miramar Police Incident Report.

"It was awful," said neighbor Robin Day. "It was incredible that these kids could physically throw these little dogs onto these ducks, and I think people associate these kinds of attacks with big dogs but it was these tiny dogs that tore apart this duck."

At the scene, the boys stated to police that the dogs did attack the animal but denied that they were responsible for the deadly attack. Other neighbors back up this version of events too, saying the dogs acted on their own.

Both boys were taken into custody, arrested and charged with Cruelty to Animals. They were later released to family members pending a court hearing.

The duck was taken to an animal hospital where it later died.
