SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBS4) ― Officials found plenty of horses with sunken hides and visible ribs at a Southwest Miami-Dade farm, charging the owner with animal neglect; at least 40 horses suffering from physical and other abnormalities were found.

The farm is located at 13820 SW 202nd Ave., and the owner, Carlos Carruitero, was charged Thursday with four counts of animal cruelty. He's since posted a $1,000 bond.

It's not known if the reported abuse may have something to do with economic hardships for the owner. The caretaker of the property said when the owner left on vacation, he left insufficient funds to cover feeding expenses.

The price of hay, the main source of horse nutrition, has more than doubled over the past year because of drought and record-high costs of fuel needed to grow and haul the crop. Horses naturally graze on grass, though they need hay and other feeds, too.

The South Florida Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which gets involved in rescuing horses, mentioned that these animals also get neglected when horse breeders cannot sell unwanted animals.
