Fourteen Animal Service Workers Fired
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Calls for help from Miami-Dade County Animal Services may take a little longer in the coming weeks.
Due to budget cuts 14 employees have been given notices of termination which go into effect in 21 days.
Agency director Sara Pizanno said because of the cut backs, the public can expect longer wait times for adoptions, longer response times on calls to clean up dead animals and animal control help. Also, response to calls about illegally tethered animals could take more than a day or so.
The cuts come at a time when the department is seeing a record number of animals coming in due to the economy and the housing crisis. The Animal Services Department receives approximately 22-percent of its budget from the County's General Operating Fund, while the remaining 78-percent comes from the sales of dog licenses, shelter fees, enforcement fines, private grants, and donations.
