Oscar The Naked Cockatoo Is A Worldwide Sensation

Oscar Has Appeared On Inside Edition & The Early Show

Ellen Degeneres Wants Her Next

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A chance encounter with a remarkable bird has launched a new international and internet sensation.

Of course, it's Oscar the naked cockatoo.

Last month, CBS4 reporter Marybel Rodriguez stumbled upon Oscar while doing a story at the Broward County Humane Society about a group of dogs that had recently been rescued. While there Cherie Wachter, the shelter's director of marketing, introduced Rodriguez to Oscar the naked cockatoo.

Wachter said Oscar was rescued by the Wildlife Care Center 12 years ago after she was found living in a home in deplorable conditions; Oscar had actually been kept in an unused bar-b-q grill. There was a problem. Oscar had been diagnosed with the 'beak and feather disease', a highly contagious virus, which could prove fatal to other birds so the Broward County Humane Society took her in.

Cared for at the shelter, Oscar thrived but her feathers did not due to the virus.

Wachter said in the 12 years that Oscar has been living at the Humane Society hundreds of people have met her, including many reporters, but no one ever did a story on her.

After seeing Oscar, Rodriguez decided that was about to change.

After doing a story about Oscar for CBS4, Rodriguez said she was amazed at all the attention it, and Oscar, have received. Since the story aired two weeks ago, Oscar has become an international star, graced the cover of many newspapers across the country and the world, she's appeared on newscasts from coast to coast and has become an internet sensation.

Oscar has been featured on Inside Edition, The Early Show, E's The Soup and has become a YouTube phenom. The Ellen Degeneres Show has also called to see if Oscar would be up for a little day time talk.

More than twelve years after Oscar made a home at Broward County Humane Society; taking her daily walks down the halls and in their courtyard, Oscar has managed to travel the world through the magical world of technology.
