Tamarac Pit Bull Attack Nearly Kills Dog

TAMARAC (CBS4) ― Lizzie's a little dog with some big problems. She's a 7-year-old dachshund that is covered with stitches and staples in her mid-section after a vicious pit bull attack. It happened Tuesday evening when Jane Van Lengen was walking Lizzie past a neighbor's home in Tamarac.

"The next thing I know, the dog was attacking," remembered Van Lengen. "It was like all in seconds."

The dog that was attacking Lizzie was a pit bull named Phoebe. Van Lengen said at one point, she was holding one end of Lizzie, trying to wrestle it away from Phoebe. "She has the other end of my dog, that's all I can see," said Van Lengen. "She is chomped down on it and I'm trying to hit the dog to let my dog go."

Van Lengen said she was knocked to the ground. It wasn't until Phoebe's owner ran outside that the dog finally released it jaws.

"I wish she never did it," said Mike Rivera, Phoebe's owner. Rivera said his father had just washed the floor and left the house door open when Phoebe ran outside.

"I feel really sorry," said Rivera. "I wish I could take all of that back. I wish I would have closed that door when I had the chance."

Now Lizzie is at the Coral Springs Animal Hospital. She's undergoing a blood transfusion. Vets believe she will get better after the transfusion. Phoebe's fate is already sealed. She will be put to sleep. Rivera said this is the second time in four months that she's attacked another dog.
