NEW TAMPA, FLORIDA (CBS4) ― A 66-year-old mail carrier was on his route Friday when he reached into a mail box and was bitten on a finger by a snake in New Tampa, Florida.

In this community just north of Tampa, Efrain Arang said he shook his arm and smacked the snake against his car door to break its grip.

He wrapped his finger and continued to deliver mail for about 10 to 15 minutes before he started feeling sick and realized he needed help.

Wildife experts said it is not uncommon for snakes to crawl into open mailboxes when the ground is wet.

Arango was admitted to the hospital for an overnight stay, and was expected to make a full recovery.
