Staff members at Miami Metrozoo are mourning the loss of a giant green anaconda which was part of the zoos new Amazon and Beyond exhibit.
The adult green anaconda, which was 17 feet long and 300 pounds, was found dead on Saturday, Feb. 14th, according to Metrozoo Communications Director Ron Magill.
A necropsy indicates that the snake suffered from an intestinal infection. Test results on other organs, including the lung, heart, kidney and stomach, are pending and won't be available for several weeks.
The large female constrictor arrived at Metrozoo on December 2nd after it was purchased from a local dealer. The snake originally came from Guyana after being captured in the wild about a decade ago.
Metrozoo does have two smaller anacondas that will replace this animal until a larger specimen can be located.
