John McCain Talks To CBS4

MIAMI (CBS4) ― All eyes are on Florida as a key state to win the 2008 presidential election, and because of this both candidates are doing heavy campaigning throughout the state, and addressing problems that affect our state in particular.

John McCain talked with CBS4's Antonio Mora, in a one-on-one interview about what his plans are for the economy, he addressed a not so flattering record that Florida has broken this month. We now rank number two in the nation when it comes to foreclosures. Nevada ranks number one. McCain sees solutions in the way the government is buying up mortgages.

"In Florida, the housing crisis is severe," said McCain. In the depression we had something called the Homeowner's Loan Corporation. It went out and bought mortgages and gave people new mortgages they could afford. And guess what? Over time, values of the loans went up and the treasury made money. We've got to do that again."

And close to the hearts of many South Floridians is Cuba.

He says it's not time to bring down the embargo against Fidel Castro's dictatorship.

"The same reason why it wasn't time for change during the Cold War, when Ronald Reagan went down to Berlin and said, 'Take down this wall,'" said the McCain. "We kept the Castro brothers contained. I would never sit down across the table with them without any precondition, so they can have a forum and legitimize their brutal regime."

McCain continues to emphasize that he has the leadership needed to fight the two wars that the U.S. is engaged in. He says serving the country has always been his priority.

"There's nothing greater than to serve a cause greater than your self-interests."
