Crist Voices Concerns About Sotomayor
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
Governor Charlie Crist began to distance himself from some of the moderate wings of the Republican Party when he said he had concerns about likely Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. "I have strong concerns that Judge Sotomayor would not strictly and objectively construe the Constitution and lacks respect for the fundamental right to keep and bear arms," Crist said.
Crist's statement regarding the right to bear arms and the strict constructionist ideals were likely an appeal to the more conservative base of the Republican Party which has been reportedly uneasy with Crist's support of President Barack Obama's stimulus plan.
Crist sits far ahead in both polling and fundraising compared to his main rival in the Republican primary, former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio.
Still, the position comes with a certain amount of peril for Governor Crist when dealing with the Hispanic vote. "We're very, very disappointed," Luis De Rose of the South Florida Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce told CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.
