Rubio Said Close To Decision On Senate Race

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― Former House Speaker Marco Rubio says he is close to an announcement about running for the US Senate seat now held by retiring Mel Martinez, but the MIami-Dade Republican said his decision won't be based on the political plans of fellow Republican Gov. Charlie Crist.

Rubio already has a Senate exploratory committee and says he'll make his final decision on a run "very, very shortly."

When Martinez announced in December that he wouldn't seek a second term, most expected a flood of candidates to enter the race, but so far no major Republicans have said they will run for Senate, largely because most potential candidates are waiting to see if Crist will seek the seat.
