TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― So how do Florida gas stations compare to gas stations across the nation?

According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Bureau of Petroleum Inspection: Currently there are 202,913 petroleum dispensing devices listed in the state's database.

Complaints
In 2006, the bureau received 4,678 consumer complaints
In 2007, the bureau received 4,431 consumer complaints
In 2008, the bureau received 3,949 consumer complaints, to date

Discrepancies
In 2006, 2,930 of 136,928 devices tested were found to be inaccurate, statewide.
  • 2,050 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel.
  • 880 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Broward County
In 2006, 145 of 4,701 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.


  • 76 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel.
  • 69 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Miami Dade
In 2006, 373 of 5,234 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 189 (50.7%) of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 184 (49.3%) of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Monroe County
In 2006, 24 of 509 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 22 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 22 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.

In 2007, 3,028 of 123,283 devices tested were found to be inaccurate, statewide. 
  • 2,000 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 1,028 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Broward County
In 2007, 274 of 8,310 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 134 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 140 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Miami Dade County
In 2007, 486 of 12,265 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 276 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 210 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Monroe County
In 2007, 16 of 392 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 13 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 3 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.

In 2008, to date, 2,295 of 74,631 devices tested were found to be inaccurate, statewide. 
  • 1,772 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 523 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Broward County
In 2008, to date, 178 of 4,954 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 108 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 70 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.
Miami Dade County
In 2008, to date, 293 of 4,766 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.

  • 218 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 75 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel. 
Monroe County
In 2008, to date, 29 of 526 devices tested were found to be inaccurate.
  • 27 of the inaccurate devices were giving away fuel. 
  • 2 of the inaccurate devices were not delivering enough fuel.

The Bureau issued: 

33,735 corrections in 2006 for failure to meet the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44; an 80.2% device compliance rate, statewide. 

40,478 corrections in 2007 for failure to meet the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44; a 76.5% device compliance rate, statewide. 

25,897 corrections in 2008, to date, for failure to meet the requirements of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbook 44; a 75.4% device compliance rate, statewide. 


The Bureau issued: 
277 stop sale orders in fiscal year 05/06. 
352 stop sale orders in fiscal year 06/07. 
496 stop sale orders in fiscal year 07/08. 

There are currently 43 state retail petroleum inspector positions.
