"Green" Friday Starts Christmas Tree Season

Southwest Ranches (CBS4) ― At the retail chains, it's 'Black Friday". At the Seven Brothers Nursery in Southwest Ranches, it's "Green Friday". Families hit the pavement, dressed in red, and looking for some green - trees, that is.

Virginia Diaz has her house already decorated and said the tree she buys will top it off. She told CBS4's Jim Robinson the big difference between fake and real trees is, "just that fragrance."

Virginia and her husband Raymond's children are older, so standing in line with the rest of the "Black Friday" folks isn't worth it. They do love getting ready for the season, however, and that includes finding the perfect Christmas tree.

"You want something that is soft on the arms as you're putting those ornaments on." Virginia Diaz told Robinson. She wants a Fraser Fur.

Armando Binelo is scoping out the nursery for the perfect tree as well. A fan of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, he said, "I'm like the Chevy Chase type guy.  I grab the tree that is, that is just a little bit too big."  Luckily, the tree Binelo bought today comes without a crazy squirrel.

His wife and daughter Grace are helping him. "She's eleven months today, and she gets to pick the tree," said Binelo.

So how do you keep the darn thing alive and healthy for the season?

Raymond Diaz tells Robinson, "pour boiling water when you first get the tree, and what that does is dissolve the sap and allows the tree to get water."

Diaz swears by it, but the nursery said cutting off dead branches and slicing an inch off the trunk will do it. But most importantly, "you gotta keep checking the water in the trees," says Seven Brothers Nursery owner Ramon Ribera.

It's out with Thanksgiving and in with Christmas, all before the turkey and mashed potatoes go cold.
