Miami Heat Turns To State Of Kansas For Help

Forward Michael Beasley Is Drafted From Kansas State University

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The Miami Heat decided only one state had players worthy of being drafted, Kansas. The Sunflower state produced all of the team's picks, two from the University of Kansas, and the big prize, forward Michael Beasley from Kansas State University.

Beasley was considered by some to be the best pure athlete in the draft. The 6'8" Beasley is a left-handed shooter who averaged 26.2 point per game and 12.1 rebounds per game. He finished the season as the top rebounder in all of Division I college basketball, and helped engineer a Kansas State victory over Kansas for the first time in decades.

"We love Michael. He's an incredible athlete. He's a great scorer. I don't even want to get into talking with you about the numbers we've analyzed. They're really off the charts," Heat president Pat Riley said.

But, the Heat had more plans for two Kansas University players in the second-round of the draft.

The Heat had a glaring weakness at point guard and addressed it by acquiring Kansas point guard Mario Chalmers. He was voted the Most Outstanding Player at this year's Final Four. Chalmers was acquired from the Minnesota Timberwolves for two future second-round picks and cash considerations.

With the clock ticking on their final draft pick of the night, the Heat decided to take forward Darnell Jackson. He led the Jayhawks in rebounding during the team's run to the NCAA National Championship.

All three players look to contribute to a team that finished a miserable 15-67 last season, which was tied for the worst in franchise history.

The Heat, assuming no injuries, has quite a dynamic lineup in place. Mario Chalmers will likely play point guard, with All-Star Dwayne Wade flanking him at shooting guard. The front line will be a combination of Michael Beasley, Shawn Marion, Udonis Haslem, and Alonzo Mourning.
