FIU Rallies, Beats Louisiana-Lafayette in OT
By Solange Reyner
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Tourek Williams blocked a field goal in overtime, helping Florida International rally to beat Louisiana-Lafayette, 20-17, on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing by a touchdown in regulation, FIU quarterback Paul McCall tied it when he connected with Greg Ellingson with 10 seconds left. The Golden Panthers (2-6, 2-3) outgained the Rajin Cajuns on the ground with 169 yards, the first time FIU had done so against any opponent.
"We sit in this room
every single Sunday and I can't tell you how many times where we're
this close to blocking a field goal. I'm talking millimeters,"
Cristobal said. "And these guys did it. They were getting closer and
closer every week and one of our coaches was saying, 'We're going to
block a kick to win a game,' and sure enough, a self-fulfilling
prophecy."
The field goal block was the third for FIU this season, and the win snapped a two game losing streak for the Golden Panthers.
McCall had 250 yards and an interception for FIU, which overcame four turnovers.
Chris Masson had 254 yards passing, one touchdown and an interception for Louisiana-Lafayette. Louis Lee caught three passes for 62 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass from Masson to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 14-7 lead with 1:07 before halftime.
Yobes Walker rushed for 40 yards on 18 carries for the Ragin' Cajuns.
