(CBS4.com)

The Florida Atlantic Owls have become the darlings of the Sun Belt Conference. In a poll of the coaches in the league, the Owls were picked to finish first in the conference this season.

The team returns 17 starters from a team that finished first in the league in 2007. The Owls also swept the polling for both offensive and defensive player of the year. Junior quarterback Rusty Smith was the offensive selection, and senior linebacker Frantz Joseph was the defensive nominee.

Florida Atlantic received 6 out of a possible 8 votes. The Troy University Trojans came in at number 2 followed by the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, the Arkansas State Red Wolves, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, the Louisiana Lafayette Bulldogs, the North Texas Mean Green, and coming in dead last were the Florida International Panthers.

Here's how the poll looked:
1. Florida Atlantic (6)
2. Troy (1)
3. Louisiana-Monroe (1)
4. Arkansas State
5. Middle Tennessee
6. Louisiana-Lafayette
7. North Texas
8. Florida International

Numbers to the right of the team denote first-place votes.
